I read the most absurd article yesterday and I just have to share!
Apparently a California School District is stating to their 39,000 students that a good nights sleep helps to prevent HIV and other STDs. In addition, no where in their teaching do they discuss condom use.
A parent is suing for biased and abstinence only education. “Our kids need complete, accurate information to help them protect themselves against STDs and unintended pregnancy," said Aubree Smith, a plaintiff in the suit and mother of a 17-year-old daughter.
This is the first lawsuit of its kind since the law was passed in 2003 requiring public schools to provide sexual education that is "comprehensive, medically accurate, science-based, and bias-free." References in the sex ed teaching materials include the promotion of abstinence until marriage and the comparison of a girl who is not a virgin to a "dirty shoe."
While this appalling news breaks, Mississippi, which has the highest teen pregnancy rates in the state, are abandoning their "abstinence only" approach and opting for small steps toward a more honest conversation about sexual health.
The 2011 measure to provide gender-separated sexual education goes into effect for this upcoming school year. This measure requires parent permission of their child's participation. However 81 of Mississippi’s school districts, over half, have chosen to retain abstinence-only as their sole method of instruction. Seventy-one districts will adopt “abstinence-plus” classes that will continue to advocate for abstaining from sex, but include the mention of some forms of contraception.
It is time to stop teaching children with what are personal views and instead give them the knowledge to protect themselves with whatever they decide! Ask yourself this question, "did you always conform to your parents and teachers views?"
