The History of the Sex Toy

Though sex toys are currently used to aid sexual pleasure, surprisingly, they have been around for ages!

Let's focus on the vibrator: Vibrators are a sex and masturbation tool utilized by women as well as men. However, the first vibrator was created as a therapeutic device for doctors use on female patients that were diagnosed with hysteria. At that time hysteria was one of the most common medical diagnosis' and included symptoms such as nervousness, insomnia, loss of sex drive and the act of causing trouble for others. In retrospect, the symptoms were so brood that most women were diagnosed with hysteria, however, this disorder has since been debunked. Hysteria was originally believed to have been the result of a woman's uterus "wondering" throughout her body. Later physicians viewed the disorder as a consuence of inadequate or insufficient sex.

For many years the treatment of hysteria was a pelvic massage resulting in orgasm. Usually these procedures were done by the doctor and multiple treatments were required. As you could probably imagine, the doctors received a hefty payment for this "procedure".

As electricity came to be a common household item so did vibrators. They were less expensive then going to your doctor to have this work done. Believe it or not the vibrator was approved for home use just after the sewing machine, fan, teakettle and toasters.

Those initial devices look very frightening! And modern day vibrators are now battery operated, solar operated, waterproof, and/or move to the beat of music. They are made in different sizes, shapes and for different orifices. Amazing that this handy pocket rocket started as a medical procedure!
