10 Steps to Getting Organized

I dub this thriving Thursday! As an entrepreneur, you usually are all aspects of your business from the receptionist to the CEO. And in this fast paced world that hopefully leads you to success you must organize your business. This is easier said than done usually however, if you can train yourself to do it your business and life will come easier to you.

Since we are in a new year and are tackling those resolutions, this is one you can and should accomplish!

1. Organize your desk: update your files, replace worn and torn files; color code your filing system to make the task of filing a bit easier; file those papers that have been sitting on your desk for months, label folders, and DO NOT use the title misc for a catch all!

2. Make a list and check it twice: There are so many things that need to be accomplished in a day and something is bound to be missed. Write yourself a task list to use in structuring your day. You may not cross all of the items that list in a day but at least you know where to start the next day.

3. Pick a calendar and stick with it!: I am guilty of this one :-( Find the best calendar for you and use only one. When you have multiple calendars on your tablet, phone, computer, desk - you tend to either put things on one calendar and schedule a conflict on another or you spend more time managing your calendars than managing your business.

4. Plan Ahead: Add to your calendar the items that you need to complete for an event a week before the date. Include your personal lists such as card for mom, gift for husband, etc.

5. List your goals: Make a list of the items you want to accomplish in your lifetime. Update and review it each year to see if you goals have been reached or maybe even changed.

6. Choose a couple of current year goals: It is easier to achieve when you focus on a few steps at a time. Pick one or two goals that you want to meet this year and start working on them.

7. Get rid of clutter: If you have not used an office product in several months - get rid of it! Donate it, return for store credit, whatever you need to do to remove the clutter.

8. Start planning your next tax year: We all tend to scramble at the beginning of the year to gather our tax documents, receipts, P&L Reports and any needed items to file. If you start a box now for next tax year you remove the stress of locating later and chances are you miss things in the scramble that you can prevent if you are prepared.

9. Update your contacts: Whether you have a rolodex, database or contact list in your phone - go through and update. Remove those you do not contact any longer, confirm current information, add new contacts.

10. Feng Shui: Now you may not want to get elaborate with this but definitely make this area have a good flow and some serenity since you spend so much time there!

Well I gotta go.....I have an office to organize!
